Our modern world is governance-mad. The regulatory requirements on organisations restrict their managers and leaders from decisive action that would make our businesses more competitive. In the Australian Defence Force, leaders are forgetting how to be risk-takers. This is largely a result of over-zealous safety rules. Although Australia’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act does make our workers safer (no one wants to go home in a box), it hamstrings effectiveness. No more so than in the military.
